ABOUT FRIENDS OF BORGNE
WHO WE ARE
…a non-profit 501(c)(3) all-volunteer charitable organization who helps provide education to children and adults in Borgne, Haiti.
…a group of people who believe that education is the way to drive lasting change in Haiti, promoting economic development, justice, and democracy.
…seeking incredibly generous people who wish to help with our mission.
SOLVING PROBLEMS
“Parents may focus their educational funds on the one child who appears to be the most promising academically, or in the interests of fairness, allow one child to go to school, alternating children each year until all have had their chance and then repeat the cycle as funds allow.”
We provide scholarships to many of Borgne’s most impoverished families.
“Haiti had one of the worst educational systems in the Americas prior the earthquake. The lack of a human resources strategy remains a fundamental issue. Teachers often go several months without being paid.”
We pay teacher subsidies so that teachers can avoid canceling classes when they hear of paying short-term jobs.
“Curriculum mismatches may occur. For example, the language of instruction is typically in French. The vast majority of students speak only Kreyol.”
We deliver colorful books written in Kreyol to students in schools and to rural areas.
“In a country where over two million people cannot cover their basic food needs, a school that doesn’t offer free food is likely to fail.”
The Fondasyon Dauphin provides nutritious meals to children attending several Borgne schools each morning. Besides giving students the nutrition to concentrate in class, knowing they’ll be well fed encourages them to attend every day.
