Please help the people of Borgne, Haiti, prepare for COVID-19!
Without adequate ICU care, it is so important to reduce the spread of the virus.
*** Update: As of September 18, the Fondasyon Dauphin sewing program has produced over 2000 reusable cloth masks. Some of the beneficiaries of their work include hospital workers, scouts, cemetery maintenance crew, farmers’ work groups, and market vendors. We are relieved that COVID-19 has not yet had a major outbreak in Borgne, but we are staying vigilant. Food has become a major issue. ***
The people of Borgne are trying to slow the spread, by using megaphones to explain safe behavior to folks who have no access to radio or internet, setting up hand-washing stations, and sewing masks. Even food is in desperate shortage, since few people are working. They are stepping up to this difficult challenge, but need your help to finance it.
Education in Haiti is not free. We support children from the most vulnerable families in Borgne with the tuition, books, uniforms and school supplies needed for an education.
Healthy brains need good nutrition. We support the skilled cooks at the Fondasyon Dauphin to provide a healthy daily meal to make sure our students are ready to learn.
By helping schools pay teacher salaries, they are able to lower tuition for all students, and teachers have consistent, guaranteed income to support their own families.
Books are rare in the rural countryside of Haiti, even within the schools. Our librarian and books travel by donkey to bring the joy of reading to students and schools in remote villages.
Learning to play an instrument is good for the brain and keeps children out of trouble after school. In Haiti it can also be a way to earn income, playing holidays and funerals.
Due to the large market for uniforms, Haitians can earn a decent income sewing and mending. Using treadle machines, our sewing instructors teach young women this valuable skill.
Raising animals is a way of saving and investing in Haiti. We partner with local peasant organizations to pass on the age-old skill of raising pigs to the youth contingent of their organizations.
As internet and computer access becomes more prevalent in the rural areas of Haiti, we are training teachers to incorporate technology in their learning and teaching.
Summer programs vary each year, but provide continuity of instruction, opportunities for fun in a community atmosphere and much needed meals to students during the summer.
